Community School

The Tenderloin Community School (TCS) stands out brightly in the neighborhood, filled with the lively sounds of children’s laughter and energy. This colorful elementary school, adorned in vibrant red and yellow, opened its doors in 1998, signifying a significant positive change for the community it serves.

The establishment of this school was made possible by BAWCC, which spearheaded the effort to bring it to fruition. Through our initiative and leadership, children in the Tenderloin now have access to their own school, and families can actively participate in their children’s education.

BAWCC’s dedication to realizing the community’s vision has resulted in a remarkable school equipped with tailored service areas. It serves as a shining example, attracting educators from around the globe who come to study what strategies work best in transforming a community for the better.

What We Offer at TCS

More than two decades after building TCS, BAWCC is still invested daily in its growth and development. Today we provide a variety of services within the school and hold a tight partnership with the school district to ensure students get the services they need.

01 - After school programs

Led by both classroom teachers and BAWCC instructors, our Clubs offer students opportunities they might not otherwise have. They also give teachers the chance to explore new subjects they’re passionate about. These Clubs are open to all students at the school, and they’re completely free.

We offer a variety of Clubs, such as international cuisine and creative arts, allowing students to engage in activities that expand their horizons and spark their creativity.

02 - Additional Staff and Support

The staff at BAWCC play a vital role in supporting educators by providing assistance when needed. They serve as a valuable resource, offering guidance, expertise, and additional support to help educators navigate challenges and enhance their effectiveness in the classroom. Whether it’s providing materials, sharing best practices, or offering one-on-one mentoring, BAWCC staff are dedicated to ensuring that educators have the tools and support they need to succeed. By fostering collaboration and communication between educators and BAWCC staff, they work together to create an environment that fosters learning and growth for both teachers and students alike.

03 - TCS Beautification Day

This yearly occasion gathers the Tenderloin community to enhance and elevate our school environment. Parents, students, educators, and other community members volunteer their time to engage in various activities such as gardening, painting, cleaning, playing games, organizing books, and much more. Beyond the physical improvements made to the school, this event serves as a platform to strengthen relationships and connections among everyone in the Tenderloin neighborhood. It’s a day filled with collaboration, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to the well-being of our school and community.

04 - Supplemental Support

BAWCC stands steadfast in its support for TCS, addressing any current needs that arise. From financing printing services for teachers to ensuring that students and their families receive annual yearbooks at no cost, we are committed to consistently dedicating our time and resources to making TCS a special and secure environment for all students and educators. This unwavering commitment reflects our belief in the importance of fostering a nurturing and inclusive community where everyone can thrive and succeed.

03 - Dental Clinic

The integration of a full-service Dental Clinic within the school’s premises addresses a crucial need identified by parents in the Tenderloin community. By providing on-site dental services, the school ensures that all 350 students have access to essential dental care without the logistical challenges often associated with scheduling appointments outside of school hours.
The partnership between BAWCC and UCSF’s Pediatric Dentistry Division underscores a collaborative effort to support the dental health needs of the students. Since its inception in 2002, the Clinic has served hundreds of students annually, many of whom had never received dental care prior to their visit. This initiative not only improves the oral health outcomes of the students but also promotes overall well-being and academic success.

The convenience of scheduling dental appointments during school hours minimizes disruptions to the students’ education. By offering a range of services including check-ups, teeth cleaning, x-rays, fillings, sealants, and crowns, the Dental Clinic ensures comprehensive care tailored to the needs of each student. This holistic approach to dental health aligns with the school’s commitment to supporting the overall development and success of its students.
