Tenderloin Community School

A Model of What a Community School Can Be

The brightest building in the Tenderloin is alive with children’s voices, laughter and energy as neighborhood students pour through the doors of the Tenderloin Community School.  This vibrant red and yellow elementary school opened in 1998 marking an important change in this low-income, inner-city community.   Now, thanks to BAWCC’s initiating and leading the effort to get this neighborhood school built, Tenderloin children have their own school, and families can be involved in their children’s education.

BAWCC’s work to make the community’s vision a reality has resulted in a beautiful school with custom-built service areas.  It is a model, being studied by educators from around the world, of what works to make a difference in a community.
